Study of current Motherboard
- after study of MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, ASRock H97, H87, H81 series, most feathers are about the same, but there are some key spec difference
- most H87, H81 motherboard makers support 1GB shared graphic memory, with some support up to intel's max 1792MB shared graphic memory
- however, H97 motherboard makers started to limit shared graphic memory max to 512MB, while ASRock still the only one support max 1792MB shared graphic memory, maybe because only ASRock doesn't make dedicate graphic card, has no intention to limit integrated graphic usage.
- From an official chipset perspective, the only thing new in Z97,H97 vs Z87,H87 is the addition of PCI-E M.2 (10Gb/s) and SATA Express, just a incremental upgrade.
- note
- all DD3-1600Hz
- M means mATX
- B85 support 32GB ram, 4 slots

Study of current SSD, Storage, and Data Transfer
- ref:
SATA port, SATA storage, and PCIe storage
- sata cable has not difference in sata3 and sata2 labels:
- Sata Express (16Gb/s=1.97GB/s)
- Sata III (6Gb/s=600MB/s)
- while those 550MB/s write read SSD are sata III device, so they won't have better speed when using on sata express.
- while mSata is same as Sata III but for those 2.5inch SSD without bigger case, and later idea carry over into M.2 port with even smaller size, like 2260 = 22cm W x 60cm H, 2280 = 22 cm W x 80cm H, 2242 etc.
- M.2 port may differ in the transfer speed,
- M.2 SATA SSD is same as Sata III SSD speed (6Gb/s=600MB/s),
- M.2 PCIe 2.0 x4 SSD is at 0.5GBps x 4 = 2GBps
- M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD is at 1GBps x 4 = 4GBps (w. tech called NVMe=Non-Volatile Memory Express)
- while, rarely there are sata express device, as more faster device got for M.2 PCIe port (NGFF=next generation form factor), as M.2 is smaller

PCI Express (PCIe) connection interface related
- Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) connection protocol (old)
- work like a bus
- connect devices like sound card, video card, network card
- 32 bits data = 32 wires (64 wires for PCIx) at max speed of 33MHz = 133MBps data (PCIx=512~1024MBps)
- max 5 device at a time
- Interference and signal degradation are common in parallel connections.
- Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) connection protocol (new)
- work like a network, with a switch that controls several point-to-point serial connections
- faster than PCI, and more bandwidth serial connection, also replacing AGP slot
- Smaller PCIe cards will fit into larger PCIe slots. ignores the extra connections
- a x4 card can plug into a x16 slot. A x16 card, however, would be too big for a x4 slot.
- Compare to “different CPU different CPU slot”, GPU all can use same PCIe slot, easy upgrade
- CPU determine the Max PCIe Lanes, Motherboard determine the configuration of lanes spread
- when CPU has max 16 PCIe lanes, like some 1150 socket. = with 2 x16 GPUs sharing 16 lanes, resulting each GPU only take x8 link
- The primary x16 GPU is connected directly to the CPU without routed through the chipset.
- chipset’s lanes are used for the following:
- Secondary x16 slot (x4)
- Two x1 slots (x2)
- M.2 slot (x4)
- Gigabit LAN (x1)
- PCI bridge (x1)
- example, Z170 chipset support 20 PCIe-3.0 lanes (=x16 = x16+x8+x8 = x8+x4+x4)
- H170 chipset support 16 PCIe-3.0 lanes (=x16)
- PLX Switches have capacity constraints: 16 PCI-E lanes are nearly always driving 2-4 PCI-Express x16 devices. But PLX switching also has one critical advantage: it fools each device into believing it has a full x16 link present, and it will deliver all 16 lanes of bandwidth to a device if available upstream. 2-4 GPUs attached to a single PLX switch @ PCI-E x16 links will nearly always outperform 2-4 GPUs operating at PCI-E x8 speeds without one.
- PCIe link or connection
- PCIe lane
- 1 lane = 1 bit per cycle = x1 link = 1 send wire + 1 receive wire = 200MBps per direction
- (enough for a 1Gbps network connection + audio + storage )
- (PCIe 3.0 x1 = 985MBps = 1GBps)
- (PCIe 2.0 x1 = 500MBps = 0.5GBps)
- (PCIe 1.0 x1 = 250MBps = 0.25GBps)
- 2 lanes = 2 bit per cycle = x2 link
- 4 lanes = 4 bit per cycle = x4 link
- 12 lanes = 12 bit per cycle = x12 link
- 16 lanes = 16 bit per cycle = x16 link = 6.4GBps per direction
- (enough for powerful graphic card)
- (PCIe 3.0 x16 = 15.75GBps)
- (PCIe 2.0 x16 = 8GBps)
- (PCIe 1.0 x16 = 4GBps)
- 32 lanes = 32 bit per cycle = x32 link
- two x16 PCIe slots means support of two graphic card at the same time
- Scalable Link interface (SLI): two SLI supported graphic cards + one SLI connector = each card work half screen at sync
- CrossFire: two ATI raden graphic cards with one's compositing engine chip = each work half screen = each work tiles of screens = each work alternate frames

USB ports related
- USB Type-C isn’t the same thing as USB 3.1. a USB type-c connector shape Port may be a usb3.1, usb2.0 or thunderbolt 3.0 interface, check its actual transfer spec for details
- USB Type-C is just a connector shape, those traditional usb shape called type-A

general
info:
- just keep in mind that the single 4pin connector can only push a certain amount of watts. More than two fans might have diminishing returns when it comes to allowing all the fans to spin at their maximum rpm.
- A better solution would be to power the fans by a sata/molex connector and have them controlled by a single pwm source like the cpu fan header.
- For the radiator / Heatsinks you need a fan with high static preassure. For the case you need high airflow.
- Radiator : Sicleflow
- Casefan : Xtraflow

NAS vs Shared Folder
- NAS is a mini computer with built-server
- you can turn a pc to a NAS with freeNAS tool
- just make sure your PC network card and your CPU can handle the load from other computer accessing file.
- although NAS is more power efficient since it is a weak mini pc.
- another advantage of NAS is that it is a all-in-one ready solution, for advanced disk feature like RAID setup, backup software, share control. also it is more portable and can be moved around than a PC
- while modern motherboard support RAID in some way, but you need to setup everything from scratch.
RAID is not a backup
- if it crashes or corrupts, it crashes and corrupts
- backup to another device is always safe
- saving file to network drive will always be affected by stability of network connection, if it corrupts, it will corrupt.

Chipset of motherboard
ref: intel chipset list
Intro of Chipset:
- a set of electronic components in an integrated circuit;
- manages the data flow between the processor, memory and peripherals;
- part of the motherboard;
- each work with a specific family of microprocessors;
- controls communications between the processor and external devices;
- crucial role in determining system performance.
Notes of Chipset:
- connection between processor and the rest of the machine
- its northbridge for communications with high-speed devices
- its southbridge for rest device
- newer CPUs integrate further into PCIe controller and integrated graphics
- since 2008, remaining northbridge and southbridge functions into a single chip. like Intel's “Platform Controller Hub” (PCH), as an enhanced southbridge for the remaining peripherals
CPU socket type on chipsets:
- LGA 1155 (H2), for Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPUs
- PCH companion type:
- 7-series chipsets: Z77, Z75, and H77
- LGA 1150 (H3), for Haswell CPUs
- 2 channels of DDR3 memory and a maximum of 16 full-speed (8 GT/s) PCI Express 3.0 lanes, splitting among up to three add-in devices
- 8 PCIe 2.0 shares 2GB/s link with 6 SATA 6Gb/s, 6 usb 3.0, GbE net
- Most motherboards with the LGA 1150 socket support varying video outputs (VGA, DVI or HDMI)
- PCH companion type: (8,9-series for Haswell CPUs)
- Z97 Express (replace Z87, feature PCIe 3.0 pathway split): for Haswell, 8 PCIe 2.0 lane, 6 USB3, 6 SATA6Gb/s
- H97 Express (replace H87): for Haswell
- Q87 Express (replace Q85 with 2 less SATA; which replace B85 with less usb; which replace H81 with 2 less SATA, 2 less USB3, 2 less PCIe 2.0): H87 with VT-d, TXT, vPro
- note: Z(P) = Performance Class, overclockers; H = Mainstream, non-K SKU CPU, no multi-GPU
- note: (Z87, H87, and H81) are intended for the average or enthusiast home user
- note: (Q87, Q85 and B85) lack many of the performance features but include features useful for IT departments
- LGA 2011, for Ivy Bridge-E 4800,4900 and Sandy Bridge-E 3800,3900 CPUs
- 40 PCI-e 3.0, update to 6 cores
- PCH type:
- X79 Express: 2 SATA 6Gb/s, 4 SATA 3Gb/s, no USB3
- LGA 2011-v3, for Haswell-E 5900, 5800 CPUs
- 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes (28 for 5800 CPU), update to 8 cores
- 4 channel DDR4
- 8 lane PCIe 2.0
- PCH companion type:
- X99 Express (replace X79): DDR4 memory, 10 SATA 6Gb/s, 6more USB3, 8 PCIe 2.0,
More MotherBoard connection
- 24-pin extended ATX (EPS) power connector
- 8-pin CPU power (EPS12V/ATX12V) connector
- PCI Express x16 graphics card slot
MotherBoard Format and Visual Size
- ATX standards include microATX and FlexATX
- smaller motherboard fits larger case
GPU
- profession targeted cards case study:
- for Nvidia, high performance anti-aliased lines and two-sided lighting were reserved for its Quadro product
- important Note:
- difference 3D software responses differently to different graphics card
- 3DS Max doesn't improve much with Quadro card, comparing to GeForce card.
- since 3DS Max 2012, Max nirtous speedup has improve a lot with GeForce series gaming cards
- 3DS Max performance affected more by amount of objects instead of amount of faces
- 3D modeling requires more single Core performance rather than number of core
- multiple CPUs only good for rendering and simulation
- while low poly modeling doesn't require much GPU, anything will do
- Maya 3D shading display needs more aliasing power when using high poly, so professional card can provide a lot of help

- the colored pair is a dual channel set and you should install RAM as a pair to take advantage of dual channel speed
- You should install 2 of the same sticks as a matching pair on the same color slots
- then another 2 that are the same in the remaining two slots.
- Ideally you want to have all memory be identical in a system
- RAM kits are just bundles of individual sticks and sold off as one package. (except they have been tested together)
- dual channel ram kits = 2 sticks in a pack
- 4 channel ram kits = 4 sticks in a pack

- 6850x has 40 pcie lanes, while 6800 and 5820 only 28.
- while x99 2-ways slr in x16+x16 mode require 32 lanes, while 28 lanes only can do x16+x8
- and to enable 2 m.2 disk all in x4 mode, it require cpu more than 28 lanes
- add hyperthread, cost 100 more

Conclusion: Dual Chamber Design is the best Solution for mid tower for best multi-gpu setup
- CORSAIR Crystal Series 680X RGB [ESLOT: 8] (370) (replacing air flow series like 540)
- Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic (174) [ESLOT:8]
- Tecware VXR (109): [ESLOT:8] (has top,btm,2xside filter, similar design as LL 011)
- others:
reference reading
- ss ML08B-H (139) + ss 500W SFX-L 80+G: V-stack
- ss SG13 (79) + normal psu: (box+side, power stack, no filter, bad)
- NZXT H500 (119) (good 3rd gpu flow, fixed psu shroud with full length hole panel, air flow?)
- Phanteks P300 (99) (tower, base for 3rd gpu? psu shroud not removable)
- InWin 303 (209) (full glass tower, and 3rd gpu from bottom hole, finally a case without shroud, intake?)
- Fractal Define Meshify C (139) Great takeout filter for cleaning, psu shroud remove for front part, hole rigid at behind part
- CM SL600M (best empty space for 3rd gpu, and psu moved to front to no block)
- Lancool One Digital [ESLOT:7] (145)
- LianLi PC-011DX [ESLOT:8] (199) dual glass, separate space for psu, so like InWin 303 but with more side air, 3rd gpu got whole bottom for air,
- LianLi 011 air:
- more practical version of above but (below video show no better air performance), with 1 glass but with direct front intake
- Corsair Air Flow 540 [ESLOT:8] (205) (separate psu space design, like LL 011dx, tons of space for 3rd gpu air flow, short of top and psu filter)
- Corsair Carbide 400c: [ESLOT:7] (159) (bottom cover can take out, but seems same as above for last gpu spacing, it brands as multi gpu case)
- CM H500M [ESLOT:7] (279) (improved on H500P) has removable psu shroud, can slide into psu from side, big front intake
- CORSAIR Obsidian 450D [ESLOT:7] (179)
- same as below, touching atx board, no psu shroud
- CORSAIR Obsidian 750D airflow [ESLOT:9] (259):
- it is just a oversize atx case, with no psu shroud, plenty of room for 3rd gpu flow, just expensive, beats above for space
July pc = { 'cpuBoard':638, 'ram':267, 'ssd':130, 'psu':163, 'case':109, } total = sum(pc.values()) total 1307
